UFH RE-cycling - fridge recycling at its best
In response to the increasing scarcity of raw materials and the resulting rise in the demand for secondary raw materials, UFH, Austria's market leader in collection and recycling systems, and REMONDIS, one of the world's largest privately owned water and environmental service companies with its headquarters in Lünen, Germany, undertook the joint project “UFH RE-cycling” last year.

Austria's most modern processing centre for fridges and freezers extends across a 15,000m_ site and operates a three-shift model, allowing it to process nearly 300,000 cooling units a year - or roughly 1,000 units a day. This means that over 400 kilograms of CFCs and other coolants and pump fluids are recovered and disposed of properly each day.

UFH RE-cycling was opened in February 2009 after a construction period of just under eight months.

Per annum amounts of 12.000t scrap iron and 6.000t metal are sorted and pre-processed, while 10.000 car wrecks are drained and 2.000t of electronic scrap are processed.
This year a waste water system dealing with the sewage of the whole site went live. The current export rate amounts 70%.

LAVU AG, an enterprise owned by the Upper Austrian waste management associations, is well known for the RCC-system, a trend-setting system for the collection of recyclable waste. In the last 20 years a region-wide net of 185 “recyclables collecting centres” (RCC) has been established in which 80 different waste materials are collected separately. LAVU AG is in charge of planning and establishing the infrastructure of these RCCs and also controls the management and staff recruitment for these centres. Since 1999, all RCC, operated by LAVU AG, have been certificated according to ISO 14001. The Waste Logistics Centre (WLC) of LAVU AG, situated in the centre of Upper Austria at Wels, serves as the functional and logistic turntable for the RCC-system. From there LAVU is responsible together with specialized partners for subsequent recovery (recycling rate of 90 %) of 80 different waste materials. In 2008 more than 210.000 tons (153 kg/cap.) were collected by the RCC. LAVU AG is also responsible for collection & handling of discarded oils and preparation for conversion into bio-diesel. Further the WEEE category “small electrical appliances” is dismounted by LAVU itself at the WLC.

The Metall Recycling Mü-Gu GmbH in Amstetten de-pollutes the E-Waste in an environmentally friendly manner and each of the de-polluted fractions are disposed of in line with the E-Waste directive. The selective Shredder separates high quality ferrous metal scrap; most non ferrous metals are further extracted and concentrated by type of metal (Copper, Aluminium etc.) by the company Metran GmbH. Even metals < 1mm can thus be extracted and re-introduced into the recycling cycle. Metran also creates a valuable Plastics Fraction, which is delivered to MBA Polymers for further processing.
