The NA Group is the largest integrated copper producer in Europe and as well the largest copper recycler worldwide. The core business is the production of copper cathodes from copper concentrates, copper scrap and recycling materials. These are then processed into continuous cast wire rod and shapes, rolled products and copper alloys. Behrendt Recycling is one of the leading electronics recycling plants in the north of Germany, located about 80km in the north of Hamburg in a city called Neumünster. Behrendt recycles electronic and electric equipment using the most advanced shredding and sorting technologies.

Battery mixtures from municipal collection systems contain several battery types with a considerable amount of heavy metals. Therefore a direct treatment of the mixture in recycling facilities is very difficult and expensive. By means of a very fast (30 batteries per second!) automatic sorting system like the High-Speed X-Ray SORBAREC plant of UNI-CYC in Bremerhaven it is possible to separate the mixture into more than 10 different battery fractions with a purity of better than 99%. This is the absolute prerequisite for any further treatment in metallurgical plants. The sorting process itself consists of several steps as large/button cell separation and sorting, handpicking of normal waste and special types of batteries, a multi-stage sieving unit and finally an X-ray sensor, which takes a picture of every single battery to detect the electrochemical type. Up to now UNI-CYC has sorted more than 18.000 tons of batteries.
